Masato is a chef at a local restaurant and during one of his breaks, he runs into an old schoolmate named Mitsukuni. Unfortunately, Mitsukuni ends up spilling coffee on Masato's lap and quickly departs without properly apologizing. To make matters worse, Mitsukuni unknowingly takes Masato's wallet, containing his money and keys, with him. Fate brings the two together again at Masato's workplace and while Masato remembers Mitsukuni from their school days, Mitsukuni barely remembers him. After a fire at Masato's home, Mitsukuni is pressured by Masato's co-workers to provide him with shelter. Living together leads to the unveiling of certain revelations between the two.
Having been assigned by the human elders the mission of stopping a mystical plague that has afflicted the Youkai with madness, Genjyo Sanzo assembles his team of Youkai warriors, desperately hoping that the disease will not affect them. While recovering from surgery, Minekura Kazuya is asked by the Zero-Sum editor-in-chief Koyagi to create a series of illustrations for the manga magazine Zero-Sum Ward. To create a theme, Koyagi rolls four dice: two hold character names, one holds a situation, and the last holds an action. With each roll, characters are placed in strange situations, much to Minekura's chagrin.
500 years before the story of Saiyuki, a heretic child with golden eyes is brought into Heaven. He is given into the reluctant care of a minor deity named Konzen, the nephew of the Merciful Goddess Kanzeon Bosatsu. Konzen eventually gives the child the name "Goku". Goku becomes friends with two other minor gods, Marshal Tenpou and General Kenren of the Western Army of Heaven. He also meets a strange little boy who seems to be his own age, the War Prince Nataku. Although Goku is happy in his new home, Heaven is not kind to heretics. There are those who would use Nataku and Goku as tools in an attempt to seize the throne of Heaven, and Konzen, Tenpou, and Kenren may not be able to save them.
