Wraiths, beings that subsist on human emotions and sow chaos wherever they roam, are invisible to humans. To safeguard humans from these creatures, magical girls utilize their granted wish's power. A troop of magical girls based in Mitakihara has tirelessly striven to guarantee the town's safety. However, two of its members, Sayaka Miki and Kyouko Sakura, have failed to get along. Mami Tomoe, their leader, hopes that they will cooperate eventually but is concerned that their discord may affect their magical girl duties. Homura Akemi, who transferred to Mitakihara Middle School, joins this group of magical girls. Nonetheless, Homura conceals the actual state of the world and possesses knowledge about magical girls that she hasn't revealed yet.
Despite being a first-year middle school student, Kokoro's severe social anxiety has caused her to drop out of school and isolate herself in her home. She spends her days consumed with guilt over the disappointment she sees in her parent's eyes. Then, one day, a glowing mirror in her room transports her to a fairy tale-like castle where she meets six other children her age. She learns from a little girl in a wolf mask called "Ookami-sama" that the key to a wish is hidden within the castle. The only rule is they must leave before 5 PM or risk being eaten by the Wolf.

The spin-off movie showcases a unique plotline. Following a catastrophic global conflict, Deunan Knute and Briareos are freelancing as soldiers of fortune in the desolate metropolis of New York. On his way back from a nearby convenience store, Subaru Natsuki is suddenly stranded in a foreign city. He finds himself surrounded by unfamiliar faces speaking a foreign tongue, realizing he has been transported to an entirely different world. Unfortunately, the shopkeeper throws him out for being insolvent, leaving him hopeless and immediately encircled by a gang of ruffians. However, just when he believes there is no escape, a mysterious young lady named Satella comes to his aid. She's on the hunt for a burglar that Subaru had seen earlier. After Satella wards off the aggressors, Subaru pledges to help her in her quest to capture the thief. After a few bizarre events, the pair ends up in an underground cellar where stolen goods are kept. When they infiltrate the cellar, they are unexpectedly attacked by a shadowy assailant resulting in both of them receiving fatal injuries. Subaru awakens to find himself transported back in time to the morning of that same day and begins a complex cycle where he relives past experiences.
Upon awakening, Subaru Natsuki finds himself in an unfamiliar room with Rem and Ram standing before him. Despite feeling disoriented, Subaru wastes no time in playfully jabbing at the sisters over their unique communication style. However, Emilia interrupts before he can make much headway in that regard, thanking him for repeatedly sacrificing himself to save her from Elsa Granhiert's wrath. After explaining that she brought him to her residence due to his injuries, Emilia introduces Subaru to Roswaal L. Mathers, the hooded figure who owns the mansion. During breakfast, Subaru expresses his desire to serve as a butler alongside Rem and Ram, and Roswaal quickly grants his wish. Despite initially adapting well to this new role, Subaru ultimately finds himself back at the mansion with no memory of the past few days. Troubled by this, he suspects that his "Return By Death" ability might be a factor but can't say for sure. Will Subaru unlock the secrets of his power and uncover the truth behind his deaths, or will he remain lost in the enigma?
